Calle Arenal is the centermost street
in the central district of Madrid, Spain.
It lies between Puerta
del Sol on one end,
… and Plaza de Isabel
II on the other end
where the Madrid
Opera House is located,
…that lead to Plaza
de Oriente,
…fronting the Palacio
Real.
Calle Arenal’s
name that means ‘sandy’, apparently
came from and ancient stream that ran through here
before being reclaimed during Madrid’s urbanization.
This is one of the earliest streets in Madrid and was an
old quarter Mozarabic Christians of San Ginés suburb,
and this is the reason why the Church of San Ginés
and this is the reason why the Church of San Ginés
one of the oldest churches in the city, dedicated to
San Ginés de Arlés of Mozarabic origin was built here.
In 2007 it was converted to a traffic- free, pedestrian street.
Calle Arenal is replete with historic buildings and shops, like
the Eslava Theater, which is located right in front of our hotel,

…and the San Ginés passage
or the Pasardizo de San Gines,
…where tourists can access another place
with history, the Chocolateria de San Ginés.
Apart from the historic buildings there are also
numerous souvenir shops in Calle Arenal,
…and my family did not have to go far
shopping for souvenirs to take home.
We also discovered a shop that sells awesome
European home decors, lamps, and accessories,
…where we finally found a and ceiling lamp,
...and an antique chest that we have looking for a long time
for my son’s bedroom that we are redecorating from a kid-
themed one to a more adult European inspired bedroom.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants,
…where we were able
to enjoy
varied Spanish cuisine everyday,
…and even had a wonderful Thai restaurant
that satisfied out craving for Asian food.
Calle Arenal is
abound with street entertainment
ranging from hair raising classic opera singers,
…orchestral groups,
…and even mind boggling display mysticism.
There is something for everyone in this vibrant street mall and
we were fortunate that we stayed at Petit Palace Opera
Hotel,
...located in Calle Arenal, right in heart of Madrid.
