La Maison de Bernadette
A Saint’s Humble Home
Immaculate Lourdes Series 16
It was our penultimate day in Lourdes, we were already
packing when we found out that we are running out of
Euros. I went to look for an for a currency exchange and
stumbled upon La Maison de Bernadette in Rue de Grotte.
La Maison de Bernadette was on the list of the
places that we would visit in Lourdes but we totally
forgot about it and I almost missed this attraction.
I bought a ticket to see the original Boly Water-mill
where St. Bernadette was born on January 7, 1844.
She called it “the happiness water-mill”,
…and her family lived here when it was part of the
numerous water- mills at the banks the ancient
Lapacca River at present located underneath the
Boulevard of the Cave draining into the Gave de Pau.
The bedroom where Bernadette was born was still intact,
… the kitchen,
…and the old water-mill
and even the grindstones.
Moulin de Boly gave us a peek on of the saint’s
humble life in the past . It is very well-maintained,
and now being managed by the her descendants.
Next to the Sanctuary of our Lady of Lourdes
La Maison de Bernadette is the second
most important pilgrimage site in Lourdes.
