Beanleaf Naga: Full Meals and Coffee

Beanleaf Naga
Full Meals and Coffee

We were supposed to dine at Lokwan in WinWin Mall
but it was fully booked. Bigg’s Diner was also full.
Beanleaf caught our attention so we checked it out.

The coffee shop had vacant seats,

…and we were delighted to learn that
they offer a wide range of rice meals.

The Sinigang na Tanigue had a perfectly sour broth
tomatoes and tamarind that belded well with the fish.

A large slab of lechon kawali was placed on
top of veggies and the peanut flavored sauce
to create a Crispy Kare Kare. It was delocious.

The perfectly fried Cajun Shrimp Tempura
sprinkled with chili powder tasted so good.
It was addicting that we ordered another one.

And of course, the BuffaloWings was just as delicious.
It had a delightful buttery- tangy sourness that blended
well with cayenne pepper sprinkled on the chicken wings.

We ended our meal the the kids’ favorite-
Choco Chip Cookies dunked in warm milk.

Beanleaf has two stores and already has been in Naga
for a while. We never actually intended to dine here as
we always thought they  serve nothing but coffee shop
fares of coffee, pastries and cakes.  We were wrong.

The food here is good and affordable and
we are definitely coming back for more.

Coffee Project’s Squid Ink Pasta

Coffee Project’s Squid Ink Pasta

The most instagrammable coffee shop in the country,

…also offers some of the best pasta dishes,
and one of them is the Squid Ink Pasta.

This dramatic jet black squid ink pasta is
called “Spaghetti al Nero di Sepia’ in Italy,

The pasta was bathed with black squid ink sauce
n a tangy sauce lends a subtle briny sea flavor,
and topped abundantly with various seafood.

It's a very interesting dish and
a delightful culinary adventure.

Bratanella’s Creamy Custard Cupcake

Bratanella’s Creamy Custard Cupcake

I received varied cakes and pastries as gifts this Christmas,
and the one that really caught my attention and my taste buds
was a box with a half a dozen of custard topped cup cakes.

It was made by Bratanella Patisserie.

The cupcake looked really good
and so soft and fragile to touch.

It had a sinfully delicious melt in the mouth buttery taste
delightfully intermingling with the sweet, creamy custard
which I initially thought was just a topping on the icing,

…but to my surprise, it went all the way down inside the cake
making a delicious and gloriously addicting saccharine filling.

This yummy Creamy Custard Cupcake
by Bratanella is a dessert to die for.

As an Endocrinologist, this is a nightmare for my sugar deprived

diabetic patients but this Bratanella Creamy Custard Cupcake
is worth breaking the doctor's order (at least) once in a while

Beanbag Coffee
Best Milk- Cookie Dunking Joint

The newly opened Beanbag Coffee

for some serious milk cookie dunking sessions.

It is located at the huge, beautiful mall atrium,

…it serves the creamiest milk in town,

soft baked choco- chip cookies,

…that turn to a melt in the mouth velvety
emulsion when soaked in the frothy milk.

It is so addicting,

… that we keep on coming back for more.

My son Tim whom we call as our own

Tugawe Cove Café; Relaxing Resort Like Café

Tugawe Cove Café
Relaxing Resort Like Café
Robinsons, Placa Naga, Al Fresco

Tugawe Cove Café is an offshoot of Caramoan’s
most popular and luxurious resort Tugawe Cove.

We have been to Tugawe Cove
 in Caramoan few years ago,

…. we tremendously enjoyed the food but
never had the chance and time to go back,
so we were happy when they opened a twin
spin-off restaurant at Robinsons’ Place Naga.

We visited Tugawe Cove Café to have a
light dinner as we were still stuffed full from
the thanksgiving lunch with our employees.
Located at the al fresco section of the mall
Tugawe Cove Café has two dining areas,

…an outdoor section that most
of the time gets crowded at night,

…as it offers the best view of
the Tree of Life’s digital show,

…and a beautiful indoor dining hall with
a lovely, indigenous tropical resort theme,

…with comfy seats
 and relaxing sofas.

My young son wanted to have a full dinner
and he ordered Buttermilk Fried Chicken.
Made of three huge slabs of perfectly fried
in flavorful breading, crunchy on the outside
while tender and juicy inside, served with
a generous mound of white rice, topped with
sunny side up egg and Kimchi as a side dish.

My wife had a delicious Club Sandwich,
which, unlike other traditional multi- layered
versions, this one had everything (egg, ham,
beef, and fresh veggies) on a single layer of
firm bread that does not get soggy when eaten.

My daughter enjoyed her Tugawe Lasagna.
It was a fusion of Pinoy homemade goodness
and Italian-style lasagna. There was a perfect
balance between layers of cheese, noodles,
and sauce which I believe was Bolognese
lightly flavored minced onion and garlic

I ordered a s Greek Panini but I believe this isn’t
a traditional Greek recipe. There’s something
delightful on this panini that I love- but just can't
pinpoint what it is. The warm bread, intermixing
with the wonderful flavors of  mushrooms, olives,
tomatoes and the gloriously pungent feta (?)
cheese- its like a wild party in your palate.

Everything went well with
the Passion Fruit Lemonade,

…and we capped our night with
a cup of perfectly blended Mocha,

…while enjoying the Tree of Life’s,

...spectacular digitally mapped show .

Anthosia Café: Eclectic and Affordable

Anthosia Café
Eclectic and Affordable

Anthosia Café is a very popular coffee shop in Naga
that used to be located in Panganiban Drive, but we
failed to dine there  since it was always full as it was
a tiny restaurant with just very few seats. It suddenly
disappeared last year and we thought  they closed shop,

Last weekend, we rediscovered its new location
in Mayon Avenue, after driving aimlessly for hours
looking for a vacant parking space so we could dine.

We were pleased that they have an ample parking,

…and located in a bigger facility.

The interior had an eclectic Filipino motif,

…with a grubby mix of old furniture,

… old-fashioned wall decors,

…classic books and records,

…and assorted works of art created by local artists.

The café’s incongruent decor creates a sully
ambiance and makes you feel like you’re in a
cluttered and unkempt swap meet store depot.

The menu had an old fashioned touch, and written in comical
Pinoy idioms, which carries a description of the dish for
guests to understand what they are ordering. It was a hot and
humid evening, so we ordered refreshments right away.

The waiter suggested trying Kapé Anthosia, apparently
their best seller. It was surprisingly good. The coffee
perfectly blended with the creamy white chocolate and
had a delightfully nutty aftertaste of hazelnut. For only
seventy pesos, it could make Starbucks run for its money.

The Caramoan lemonade was very refreshing. It was
sweetened just the right and had a nippy sting of ginger.

The same thing with Sarong Banggi that also had the
delightful ginger sting added to the zesty lemon tea.

We came for dinner so we ordered their rice meals
which at that time only two dishes were available.
First was the Tapsilog, that had tasty bits and pieces
of beef tapa lying in a generous serving of garlic rice
which we found a little oily but otherwise delicious.

Second was the Bacon Silog, that got me drooling, as they used
chunky, thick cut yummy bacon, but the fried rice was a letdown
as it was dripping wet with oil  making it unpalatably greasy.

The restaurant serves decent pasta dishes and we ordered
Maria Pasta Suplada. According to the menu the sauce
is a concoction of tamato, basil, cheese and one intriguing
item;chili love. Whatever that means nobody really knows,
but interestingly it was delicious and this is one dish that
I could recommend for anyone dining in this coffee shop.

The Hasta Pasta Siempre is a toned down version
of Alfredo Pasta with white sauce, generous toppings
of parmesan cheese and just like the suplada pasta,
it also had an interesting ingredient called herb feel.
It was okay but there is no wow factor on the dish.

I got curious with the Halik Mo Lang Burger so I ordered one.
It was served with a huge, juicy and tasty burger patty, with a
generous layer of chunky, thick cut bacon, topped with a fruit
jam and bathed with rich and creamy melted cheese. It was so
good as the sweetish jam neutralized the otherwise naturally
salty cheesy sauce. I would have raved about this burger had
it not been for the (supermarket) quality of the bun used that
could not hold on a bite as it gets soggy with all those toppings.

The Pan de Oriang, is a heart shaped pizza, named after
Gregoria del Pilar, wife of popular Filipino folk hero,
Andres Bonifacio. Available either in white sauce called
dayaday, a Bikol word for kind, or red sauce called padaba,
local term caring. We ordered a combination of both called
salawahan, a Filipino term for a nasty, deceitful two- timer.
It reminded me of Shakey’s thin crust pizza, only better as it
was not as salty and not as greasy. It tasted very, very good.

If I had to quantify and grade my review on this first time experience
in Anthosia’s Café, I would rate the  drinks as (A+), and the
burger an (A), but I could promote it to (A+), should they find a
bakery that could  supply them a better and firmer hamburger buns.

I’ll rate the pizza and pasta a (B+), rice meals a (C),
the service an (A) and the ambiance a (B-),

But it's difficult to find a superlative grade for the price
as we spent only a little over 700 pesos for everything-

...an exceptionally matchless bargain these days.
