was the ancient Iglesia de San Ginés de Arlés.

Located just across our hotel in Calle Arenal
was the ancient Iglesia de San Ginés de Arlés.
It is one of the oldest churches in the city and one
of the churches of the medieval Madrid of Mozarab
origin, built between the 12th and 13th centuries,
…dedicated to the patron saint of notaries
and secretaries, Saint
Genesius of Arles.
The nave fronting the main altar had two
aisles separated by
semicircular arches
…and several smaller chapels on the side,
…with the beautiful altarpieces
belong
to the
Neoclassical-Romantic school.
In the Santísimo Cristo Chapel there are
artworks by Alonso Cano, Luca Giordano.
El Greco’s painting is usually covered by wood and
put on display on
Saturdays from 11.30 am to noon.
Iglesia de San Ginés
de Arlés was designated as
a World Heritage site in 1982 and is worth a visit after
a relaxing snack at nearby Chocolateria de San Gines.
