Alfama’s Elevador de Sta Luzia: Scenic Route to the Castelo (Lovely Lisbon Series 11)

Alfama’s Elevador de Sta Luzia
Scenic Route to the Castelo
Lovely Lisbon Series 11

It was another case of mistaken identity.
We earlier mistook Igreja da Magdalena
for the Lisbon Se or Lisbon Cathedral,

…we had the ancient Elevador de Sta Justa in mind
when we got off the Tram 28- but we ended up at the
more recent Alfama’s Elevador de Sta Luzia  instead.

The Elevador de Santa Luzia is a funicular at
the Monte de Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo,
that connects it  to the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia.
located at to top of the hill of the same name.

Right above it is the Miraduro de Santa Luzia,

…a lovely view deck that provides
an awesome view of the city downhill.

It could be also accessed by a modern elevator,

…and a tall winding staircase.

Across the Miraduro de Santa Luzia
is the ancient Viana do Costelo,

...that serves as a rustic scenic shortcut,

…to the Costelo de Sao Jorge,

...Lisbon’s main uphill attraction.
