Mo Hin Khar: Myanmar’s National Food (Yangon, ASEAN’s Jewel Series 13)

Mo Hin Khar also known as Mohinga
is an iconic rice noodle and fish soup and
is an essential part of Burmese cuisine.



It is considered as Myanmar’s national dish,
usually eaten traditionally for breakfast but
could also be consumed any time of the day.

 

It is readily available from street hawkers on most  
roadside stalls selling several variants of mohinga,

 

…but I got to try two versions of the dish-
the first one at the Melia’s Market Place, 

 

…and the second one at the Melia’s Level Lounge.

 

The Melia’s Market Place’s pre cooked version  
of Mohinga had the rich catfish broth, together with
all the ingredients are kept heated in a  cauldron.

 

This version of Mo Hin Khar had tender strips
of what appears to be a stewed beef mesentery.
It was tasty but something I would not crave for.

 

The Melia’s Level Lounge’s  version 
was different and a lot better.

 

The rich catfish broth flavored with onions,
lemongrass, banana tree stems  spiced with
ginger and was stewed in a heated cauldron.

 

The other ingredients of  like garlic,

 

…coriander,

 

…crushed dried chillis,

 

… split chickpeas,

 

...lime,

 

… and boiled egg,

 

…were served in a buffet to be added to the rice noodles.

 

 

Eating Mo Hin Khar was as natural 
 as eating a true blue Pinoy Mami. 



It was good,
